Does French Toast Have a Lot of Carbs?
Traditional French toast is typically made with bread, which is high in carbohydrates. The bread is soaked in a mixture of eggs, milk, and often sweeteners before being fried or baked. As a result, a serving of traditional French toast can contain a significant amount of carbs.
However, with a few modifications, you can create a keto-friendly version of French toast that significantly reduces the carbohydrate content. By swapping out high-carb bread for low-carb alternatives and using keto-approved ingredients, you can enjoy French toast while staying within your daily carb limits. One slice is just 4 grams of net carbs.
Best Keto Breads for French Toast
When it comes to finding the best keto bread for French toast, there are several low-carb options available that can help you achieve that delightful, crispy texture while keeping your carb intake in check.
Many large stores may sell low carb bread such as the Kiss My Keto Brand, but you can use a few keto bread recipes too.
For this recipe we used two 90 second bread recipes for a quick keto bread. One is our coconut flour bread we use for grilled cheese which does not have psyllium husk powder and is a good replacement for white bread. The other microwave bread used is made with almond flour and psyllium husk powder and is like a whole meal bread slice.
Other low carb bread options are a slices of flaxseed bread, although it may be rather heavy in texture. A lighter option would be an egg loaf bread. Egg loaf bread is a simple and versatile option for keto French toast. It typically consists of a mixture of eggs, cream cheese, and sometimes almond or coconut flour. It has a custard-like texture and absorbs the flavors of your French toast ingredients beautifully.
Ingredients
With just a few ingredients you can make an easy and delicious breakfast.
- Keto bread - four slices of the keto bread of your choosing. Each once will have a different carbs so you may need to adjust the nutritional information.
- Unsweetened Almond milk - if you use coconut milk as a substitute, use coconut milk from a carton not a tin as it will be lighter in texture.
- Low Carb Sweetener - we used a brown sugar substitute for a deeper flavor but any low carb sweetener such as allulose or Swerve could be used.

For a special occasion or an indulgent breakfast, try keto stuffed French toast. This was the first time I had tried it and loved the taste. Stuffed French toast has a cream cheese filling in between two slices of keto-friendly bread and cooked in butter. Berries can be added to the filling for an extra sweet taste.

Serving Suggestions
No serving of French toast would be complete without a covering of whipped cream and syrup. Use a low carb sugar-free maple syrup such as the Besti Brand Pancake Syrup but other topping suggestions are:
- Low Carb Fruits - raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries.
- Chocolate chips - used sugar free chocolate chips.
- Sauces - Our keto caramel sauce is delicious.
- Coconut - toasted unsweetened coconut flakes
- Low Carb Nuts - chopped almonds or pecans
