Why You Will Love This Cottage Cheese Mousse

Despite its healthier twist with cottage cheese, this mousse maintains a creamy and indulgent texture that melts in your mouth. With just a few simple ingredients and minimal prep time, you can whip up this mousse in no time, making it perfect for a quick dessert or snack.

This mousse can be enjoyed on its own or used as a topping or filling for other desserts like cakes or parfaits, adding a delicious chocolatey twist to your favorite treats. Try serving it with a cottage cheese cookie for a hearty dessert.

Ingredients

Just 4 ingredients make this rich velvety chocolate mousse.

Labeled ingredients on a marble surface: cottage cheese, chocolate protein powder, low carb sweetener, and cocoa.
  • Cottage cheese - use plain and full fat cottage cheese. If you do prefer a lower fat cottage cheese check the ingredients for hidden sugars.
  • Cocoa - unsweetened.
  • Sweetener - we used allulose but any other low carb sweetener of choice such as monk fruit sweetener can be used.
  • Protein powder - this is an optional ingredient but helps to increase the protein content keeping you feeling fuller. We used chocolate protein powder but vanilla or other flavors can be used.

How to Make Cottage Cheese Mousse

This easy cottage cheese chocolate mousse can be made in the blender or food processor. If the mousse is too thick for your taste, add a splash of heavy cream, almond milk or coconut milk.

A blender containing cocoa powder, yogurt, and other ingredients is placed on a countertop, ready to blend.

Add all ingredients to a food processor.

Blend until smooth.

A thick chocolate smoothie is being poured from a blender into a glass cup on a marble countertop. Another glass with the smoothie is visible in the background.

Pour into serving glasses and chill.

Four glass cups filled with chocolate and strawberry mousse topped with raspberries, arranged on a grey surface with two small spoons nearby.

Serve and enjoy as a sweet treat!

Storage

Keep the cottage cheese mousse in the fridge. If you are storing it directly into a dessert glass, cover the top with cling film or plastic wrap to keep it from absorbing any other smells from the fridge. Keep any leftovers in an airtight container.

Consume the mousse within 3-4 days for optimal freshness. While cottage cheese can generally last longer when refrigerated, the addition of other ingredients like milk and sweeteners may slightly shorten its shelf life.

Two glasses filled with pink strawberry smoothies, each topped with a whole strawberry, are placed on a textured surface with two vintage-style spoons in front.

Cottage Cheese Mouse Flavor Suggestions

This recipe is for a chocolate mousse but you can easier make other flavors. A few variations are:

  1. Berry Bliss: Incorporate fresh or frozen berries like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries into the mousse for a fruity and refreshing twist. You can blend the berries into the mousse mixture or layer them between mousse layers for a visually appealing dessert.
  2. Citrus Zest: Add a burst of citrus flavor by incorporating lemon, lime, or orange zest into the mousse. The citrus zest adds brightness and a hint of tanginess that complements the creamy texture of the cottage cheese.
  3. Coffee Infusion: For coffee lovers, consider adding a splash of brewed coffee or espresso to the mousse mixture for a subtle coffee flavor. You can also sprinkle instant coffee granules or espresso powder into the mixture for a more intense coffee kick.
  4. Nutty Delight: Enhance the mousse with the rich and nutty flavor of almond extract, almond butter or peanut butter. A small amount of almond extract adds a fragrant almond flavor, while creamy almond butter or peanut butter provides a deliciously nutty taste.
  5. Spiced Sensation: Experiment with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom to infuse the mousse with comforting flavors. These spices add depth and warmth to the mousse, perfect for cozying up on chilly days.
  6. Chocolate Hazelnut: For a decadent twist, swirl in some sugar free chocolate hazelnut spread into the mousse mixture. The combination of chocolate and hazelnut creates a luxurious and indulgent flavor profile.

Feel free to mix and match these flavor suggestions or get creative with your own combinations. With cottage cheese mousse, the possibilities are endless, allowing you to customize it to your taste preferences for a perfect dessert.
