This keto Kahlua recipe is so easy and means you can enjoy your favourite coffee liqueur or low carb cocktail. Kick back with a glass over ice with no guilt!

I love Kahlua over the holidays either by itself or in cocktails and this homemade sugar free recipe means I can still enjoy it! It's great in cake frosting or a chocolate mousse too!

    What is Kahlua?

Kahlua is a coffee flavoured liqueur that is made in Mexico. It's a simple mix of rum, coffee beans, vanilla and sugar. It is used in many classic cocktails such as the Espresso Martini, Mudslide, Black Russian and White Russian.

    How many carbs in Kahlua?

However delicious Kahlua is, it is made with corn syrup with 33 grams of sugar per serving. The thick, sweet texture is a bit of a giveaway!

Rum is zero in carbs, making it an alcoholic drink you can have on a low carb diet. However, always drink in moderation.

    How to make keto Kahula

Although the texture of this sugar free version is not as thick as the original liqueur, it still has the same taste.

We used dark rum rather than white rum as dark rum has a richer flavour. We live on an island that produces great rum so we are lucky to have a choice too!

For the sweetener, we used brown monkfruit as we wanted a bit more depth in flavour to replace the corn syrup. If you don't have this, any other low carb sweetener should work.

The coffee was a strong instant coffee, but you could use a freshly made espresso with reducing the volume of it though!

Once the ingredients are mixed, you are ready to pour. There's no waiting for the flavours to develop or infuse. Mix and pour! My favourite type of drink recipe!

How to store low carb Kahlua

Store in a mason jar or sealable bottle. Keep it in a dark, cool place away from sunlight and it will last a few years. Sorry, I just laughed all over my keyboard at the idea of homemade Kahlua lasting a few years in our house! But in theory it could!

    Low carb cocktails using Kahlua

As well as enjoying Kahlua in a cocktail, we also use it in a tiramisu, tiramisu ice cream or a trifle if we want a kick to our dessert. A couple of low carb recipes we have for Kahlua are:

    White Russian

    Espresso Martini

Can Sukrin brown be used instead of the monkfruit sweetener?

Yes you could, as long as the coffee is strong enough for your palate.
