Cottage Cheese V Sour Cream
Choosing between cottage cheese and sour cream for a low-carb diet depends on your personal preferences, nutritional goals, and how you plan to use them in your meals
Cottage cheese is rich in protein, making it a great option for those looking to increase their protein intake while keeping carbs low. It typically contains around 14 grams of protein per half-cup serving, which can help you feel full and satisfied. Cottage cheese is relatively low in carbohydrates, with about 3-6 grams of carbs per half-cup serving, depending on the variety and brand. This makes it suitable for a low-carb diet.
Sour cream is higher in fat compared to cottage cheese, which can be beneficial for those following a low-carb, high-fat (keto) diet. However, it's essential to choose full-fat sour cream and be mindful of portion sizes. Sour cream contains fewer carbohydrates than cottage cheese, typically around 2 grams of carbs per tablespoon.
If you're looking for a higher protein option with a slightly different texture, cottage cheese may be the better choice. However, if you prefer a higher fat content and smoother texture, sour cream might be more appealing.
Ingredients
Just 2 simple ingredients make this easy creamy low carb and gluten free dip. With a container of cottage cheese and a packet of ranch dressing you have a tasty dip.
- Cottage cheese - use unflavored cottage cheese and ideally a full fat cottage cheese. If you are using low-fat cottage cheese, check the labels for added sugar and the carb content.
- Ranch dressing - we used a packet of dry ranch dressing mix which is low in carbs. You could make your own with dried herbs but I am yet to explore that.

Recipe Tips
For a smoother texture, you can strain the cottage cheese using a fine-mesh sieve before blending.
Feel free to adjust the ingredients according to your taste preferences. If you like a tangier dip, you can add fresh lemon juice.
If the dip seems too thick, you can thin it out by adding a small amount of water, lemon juice or Greek yogurt until you reach your desired consistency.
Storage
This cottage cheese ranch dip can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Just give it a stir before serving if any separation occurs.
