What is Alfredo Sauce?

Alfredo sauce, also known as Fettuccine Alfredo, is a classic Italian pasta sauce known for its creamy and indulgent texture. It is named after Alfredo di Lelio, an Italian restaurateur who is said to have created the sauce in the early 20th century.

Traditional Alfredo sauce is relatively simple, but it delivers a rich and luxurious flavor that pairs wonderfully with pasta, especially fettuccine. The sauce is made by melting the butter, sautéing garlic, and then adding heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. The cheese melts into the cream, creating a smooth and creamy sauce.

Just a few ingredients are need to make this quick and easy Cajun Alfredo Sauce recipe.

  • Cajun spice mix - you could use a ready made packet mix but as they can sometimes be full of fillers or hidden sugars, we recommend we make your own. Try our homemade Cajun Seasoning mix recipe.
  • Cream - heavy whipping cream is best.
  • Parmesan - fresh Parmesan gives a better flavor. Take a block of Parmesan and grate it. Add extra if you wish.
  • Garlic - Fresh garlic as you would use in a traditional Alfredo sauce. Garlic powder could be used as a substitute.
  • Butter - unsalted is preferable.

Storage

Allow the Cajun Alfredo sauce to cool to room temperature before storing it. Transfer the sauce to an airtight container or a sealable plastic or glass jar. Seal the container tightly to prevent air from entering, which can cause the sauce to spoil or develop an off-flavor.Store the container in the refrigerator. The sauce can typically be kept in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Can you freeze the sauce?

  • Let the sauce cool completely.
  • Portion the sauce into freezer-safe containers or freezer bags. It's a good idea to portion it in amounts you're likely to use in one go to avoid thawing and refreezing.
  • Remove as much air as possible from the containers or bags to prevent freezer burn. You can press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the sauce before sealing the container for added protection.
  • Label each container or bag with the date and portion size.
  • Place the containers or bags in the freezer. The sauce can be stored in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.

Recipe Tips

If you want an even creamier sauce, you can stir in grated mozzarella cheese when simmering. It will add a lovely stretchy texture to the sauce.

Remember to adjust the level of spiciness to your preference by adding more or less Cajun seasoning or cayenne pepper.

How to use Cajun Alfredo Sauce

Cajun Alfredo sauce is a flavorful and creamy sauce that can be used in various dishes to add a spicy Cajun twist to your meals. Here are some popular ways to use Cajun Alfredo sauce:

  1. Cajun Chicken Alfredo: This is a classic and popular dish. Simply cook chicken breast or thighs seasoned with Cajun spices.
  2. Cajun Shrimp Alfredo: Replace the chicken with shrimp for a seafood twist. Sauté shrimp with Cajun seasoning until they turn pink.
  3. Cajun Alfredo Pizza: Use the sauce as a pizza base instead of traditional tomato sauce. Add your favorite toppings, such as grilled chicken, bell peppers, onions, and mozzarella cheese.
  4. Cajun Alfredo Dip: Use it as a dip for keto breadsticks, low carb garlic bread, or keto tortilla chips. Warm the sauce in a microwave-safe bowl or on the stovetop, and use it as a dip for a delicious appetizer.
  5. Cajun Alfredo Casserole: Layer cooked low carb noodles, grilled chicken or sausage, and Cajun Alfredo sauce in a baking dish. Top with shredded cheese and bake until bubbly and golden for a comforting casserole.
  6. Cajun Alfredo Stuffed Peppers: Hollow out bell peppers and stuff them with a mixture of cauliflower rice, ground meat (like beef or turkey), and Cajun Alfredo sauce. Bake until the peppers are tender and the filling is heated through.
  7. Cajun Alfredo Vegetables: Use it as a sauce for roasted or steamed vegetables. Drizzle it over broccoli, asparagus, or cauliflower for a tasty side dish.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning

Instructions

  • In a saucepan over medium high heat, melt the butter.
  • Add the minced garlic to the melted butter and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Be careful not to brown the garlic.
  • Pour in the heavy cream and Cajun seasoning and stir continuously. Let it come to a gentle simmer, but do not let it boil.
  • Gradually whisk in the grated Parmesan cheese. Continue stirring until the sauce thickens and the cheese is fully melted and incorporated into the cream. This will take about 3-5 minutes.
  • Adjust the seasoning to your desired level of spiciness. Keep in mind that Cajun seasoning blends can vary in heat, so start with a small amount and add more if needed.
  • Allow the sauce to simmer for a few more minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches your desired thickness. If it becomes too thick, you can thin it out with a bit more heavy cream.

Notes

Makes 6 servings of a ½ cup serving of sauce.
