Carbs in Ketchup

You may not think ketchup contains sugar, but when you look at the nutrition label, you may be surprised. Commercial ketchup typically contains added sugars, which can significantly contribute to its carbohydrate content. A standard serving size of ketchup, which is around one tablespoon (17 grams), can contain approximately 4 grams of carbohydrates.

When you make your own sugar free ketchup recipe, you can control the sugar and salt content.

Salt in Ketchup

Salt is a common ingredient in ketchup and is used to enhance the flavor profile of the condiment. The amount of salt in ketchup can vary depending on the brand and recipe. On average, a standard serving size of ketchup (around one tablespoon) contains approximately 120-160 milligrams of sodium.

Homemade Ketchup Ingredients

Let's dive into the recipe and gather your ingredients.

keto ketchup ingredients
  • Tomato paste - Traditional ketchup is typically made using tomato paste rather than tomato sauce. Tomato paste has a thicker consistency and a more concentrated tomato flavor compared to tomato sauce. Using tomato paste as the base for ketchup allows for a richer and more robust flavor.
  • Sweetener - for a richer flavor we use brown monk fruit sweetener. Any other low carb sugar substitutes may be used.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - use a organic brand that contains the "mother," which is a beneficial colony of bacteria and enzymes that contribute to its health benefits and give it a cloudy appearance.

Cook for 5 to 10 minutes.

Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning according to your preference. You can add more sweetener, salt, or spices as desired.

Storage

Once cooled, transfer the sugar free ketchup mixture to a jar or airtight container and refrigerate for at least an hour to allow the flavors to meld together. Store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Keto Ketchup Recipe Tips

Apple cider vinegar is a popular choice for ketchup, as it provides a tangy kick. However, you can also use other types of vinegar, such as white vinegar or red wine vinegar, depending on your preference.

If you prefer a smoother consistency, you can use an immersion blender or regular blender to blend the ingredients until smooth. Alternatively, if you like a chunkier texture, you can leave the ketchup as is or add some finely chopped onions or garlic for added texture.

Taste your low carb ketchup recipe as you go and adjust the seasonings, sweetness, or acidity according to your preference. Everyone's taste buds are different, so feel free to tailor the recipe to suit your individual preferences.
