Make your own homemade Boursin cheese spread for an easy appetizer or cheese spread. A creamy combination of cream cheese, butter, garlic and an assortment of fresh herbs.

I adore Boursin garlic & herb cheese spread and could happily eat it straight from the packet if no one is watching. It is not always available in the St Lucia supermarkets and when it does appear it’s very expensive. As with most imported products, I quickly convert the price, swear loudly and am escorted off the premises.

It was time I made my own Boursin in order to enjoy it anytime I want, so I reached for a packet of cream cheese, a bunch of fresh herbs and took the food processor out of the cupboard.

Once you make your own you will never go back to the stores! For about a third of the price I had a larger container of creamy, garlic & herbs cheesy spread. I whipped up a batch for an impromptu beach day with the Chief Taster. He almost licked the container clean and this was without allowing it to sit for 24 hours too!

WHAT IS BOURSIN CHEESE MADE OF?

Boursin originates from France and is now produced in the United States. Made from fresh cream and soft cheese it has a buttery flavor and is available in a variety of flavours from garlic and herbs, black pepper to figs and nuts.

What herbs are in Boursin cheese?

You can use a variety of herbs and although fresh is best, you could try it with dried herbs. You can mix and match from the list of herbs below for your own palate. I make my homemade Boursin heavy with fresh tarragon but that’s for our own preference. I do recommend that you leave your homemade Boursin in the fridge overnight to allow the flavours to develop.

  • Dill
  • Tarragon
  • Chives
  • Parsley
  • Basil

You could try this herb flavor pairing with other soft cheeses. Add a soft Goat’s cheese to the food processor, add in the herbs and garlic and blitz. Once you get the flavor balance to your liking there will be no stopping you.

For other variations of this homemade Boursin cheese spread you could add sour cream or heavy cream for a lighter and creamier cheese spread. I wanted my cheese spread to be thick enough for a knife to stand up in, rather like the real thing.

How to serve Boursin Cheese spread

This creamy garlic & cheese spread has many uses. As well as serving this homemade Boursin cheese spread as an appetizer with low carb crackers or vegetable crudities, you could add it to sauces, use it as a chicken breast stuffing or slather it over a steak. Use it in your morning scrambled eggs and never go back to plain eggs again! Enjoy on your breakfast bagel or a slice of toasted low carb bread.
