Are Jalapenos Keto?
Yes, jalapeños are keto-friendly! They are low in carbohydrates, making them an excellent choice for a ketogenic diet. A medium-sized jalapeño pepper typically contains about 1 gram of net carbs, along with a small amount of fiber. In addition to being low in carbs, jalapeños are rich in vitamins A and C and provide antioxidants, making them a nutritious option for adding flavor and heat to your meals while keeping your carb intake in check.

How Spicy are Jalapeno Peppers?
Jalapeño peppers are considered moderately spicy, with a heat level ranging from 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) on the Scoville scale. They have a noticeable kick but are much milder than hotter peppers like habaneros or ghost peppers.
The spice level can vary depending on the pepper's maturity; younger, green jalapeños tend to be milder, while red, fully ripened ones pack more heat. Removing the seeds and inner membranes, where most of the capsaicin (spice compound) is concentrated, can also help reduce their spiciness.
Handling Jalapeno Peppers
When handling jalapeño peppers, it’s important to take precautions to avoid irritation and ensure safety. Here are some tips for handling them:
- Wear Gloves: It’s best to wear gloves when cutting and preparing jalapeños to prevent the capsaicin (the compound that makes peppers spicy) from irritating your skin. If you don’t have gloves, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling them.
- Avoid Touching Your Face: Be cautious not to touch your face, especially your eyes, while handling jalapeños. Capsaicin can cause burning sensations and irritation if it comes into contact with sensitive areas.
- Use a Sharp Knife: Use a sharp knife to slice the peppers cleanly. This minimizes the risk of crushing them, which can release more capsaicin.
- Remove Seeds and Membranes: If you want to reduce the heat, remove the seeds and inner membranes of the jalapeños, as these contain most of the spice.
- Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area or near an open window. The fumes from cutting peppers can be irritating to your nose and eyes.
- Wash Surfaces: After preparing jalapeños, wash your cutting board, knife, and any surfaces that came into contact with the peppers thoroughly to prevent cross-contamination.
- Store Properly: Store any leftover jalapeños in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and ensure they are used within a few days for the best quality.
Ingredients
All you need to make this tasty appetizer is jalapeno peppers, cheese and seasonings.
- Jalapeños: Fresh, medium-sized peppers that provide a spicy kick and sturdy vessel for the creamy filling.
- Cream Cheese: The base of the filling, offering a rich, smooth texture that mellows the heat of the jalapeños.
- Monterey Jack Cheese: Adds a sharp, cheesy flavor and helps create a golden, bubbly top when baked. Other cheeses can be substituted such as Cheddar cheese or a sharp cheddar cheese. We use Feta Cheese in another stuffed jalapeno recipe.
- Garlic Powder: Enhances the filling with a subtle, savory touch.
- Onion Powder: Adds a sweet and savory flavor to the filling, complementing the cream cheese and enhancing overall taste.
How to Make Cream Cheese Stuffed Jalapeno Peppers
These keto stuffed jalapeno peppers can be baked or air fried. Air fried are a lot faster but you can only cook a small batch at a time.
Add the seasonings to the cream cheese.
Mix and stuff the jalapeno halves.
Top with cheese and bake.
Or air fry.
Storage and Leftovers
Refrigeration: Store any leftover stuffed jalapeños in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They can last for about 3 to 5 days.
Freezing: For longer storage, you can freeze the stuffed jalapeños. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze individually before transferring them to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. They can be frozen for up to 2 to 3 months.
Reheating: To reheat, simply bake the jalapeños in the oven at 180°C (350°F) until heated through, about 10-15 minutes. If frozen, you may need to increase the baking time. You can also microwave them for a quick reheating option, though the texture may not be as crisp.
Jalapeno Popper Filling Ideas
Here are some delicious variations for cream cheese stuffed jalapeños:
- Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeños: Wrap each stuffed jalapeño with a slice of bacon before baking. The bacon adds a savory crunch and enhances the flavor.
- Spicy Sausage Filling: Mix cooked and crumbled spicy sausage into the cream cheese filling for added protein and a hearty kick.
- Cheesy Italian Style: Incorporate Italian seasoning and shredded mozzarella cheese into the filling, and bake with marinara sauce for a flavorful Italian-inspired dish.
- Herbed Cream Cheese: Mix fresh herbs such as chives, parsley, or dill into the cream cheese for a fresh, herby flavor that complements the peppers.
- Buffalo Chicken: Mix shredded cooked chicken with buffalo sauce and cream cheese for a spicy, creamy filling that’s perfect for game day.
- Avocado Twist: Add mashed avocado to the cream cheese filling for a creamy, rich texture and a slightly different flavor profile.
