Turkey Lettuce Wraps

Is This Recipe Keto-Friendly? Absolutely!

If you’re following a low-carb or keto diet, this recipe is a fantastic option. Unlike traditional Asian-inspired lettuce wraps, which often include sugary sauces and starch-heavy ingredients like hoisin and cornstarch, this version keeps things clean and keto-approved by using:

  • Ground turkey, a lean yet flavorful protein that provides essential amino acids without excess fat.
  • Soy sauce (or coconut aminos) for a deep, savory umami taste while keeping the carbs in check.
  • Sriracha and sesame oil, which add a bold kick of spice and richness without unnecessary sugars.
  • Butter lettuce or romaine, replacing high-carb tortillas or rice.

By cutting out mushrooms and bell peppers, we ensure that every ingredient contributes to a low-carb and high-protein balance. With the added crunch from water chestnuts and shredded carrots (optional for a tiny hint of sweetness), this dish is perfectly satisfying without relying on excessive carbohydrates.

Turkey Lettuce Wraps Ingredients

Turkey Lettuce Wraps Ingredients

  • Minced Turkey – A lean and flavorful protein source that absorbs all the delicious sauce while keeping the dish light. Dark turkey meat is preferred for extra juiciness.
  • Avocado Oil – A healthy fat that enhances the turkey’s flavor while preventing sticking.
  • Garlic & Onion – These aromatic ingredients bring depth and richness to the filling.
  • Shredded Carrots (Optional) – Adds a subtle sweetness while keeping the texture balanced.
  • Soy Sauce or Coconut Aminos – The main source of umami flavor, ensuring a well-seasoned turkey mixture.
  • Rice Vinegar – Brings a slight tang to balance the richness of the dish.
  • Sugar-Free Hoisin Sauce – Adds a touch of sweetness and complexity without excess sugar.
  • Sesame Oil – A small amount adds a deep, toasty, nutty flavor that complements the turkey beautifully.
  • Sriracha & Red Pepper Flakes – Provides a bit of spice, which can be adjusted based on personal preference.
  • Green Onions & Sesame Seeds – These garnishes add texture, a pop of color, and extra layers of flavor.
  • Butter Lettuce or Romaine – Used as a fresh, crunchy, low-carb wrap alternative.
  • Lime Wedges – A squeeze of fresh lime juice brightens up the flavors perfectly!

Instructions

Step 1: Start with shredding the carrots. Then mince the garlic and onion. Step 2: Mince the turkey.
Step 3: Add a little oil and heat the pan. Then add the garlic and onion, saute them for 2-3 minutes. Then add the turkey and cook for 5-7 minutes and at the end add the carrots. Cook everything together for 3-4 more minutes. Step 4: Prepare the sauce and add it to the chicken. Cook for 2 more minutes. Then assemble the lettuce wraps.

Cooking Tips for the Best Lettuce Wraps

Making these turkey lettuce wraps doesn’t require you to be a professional chef, but a few simple techniques can take them to the next level!

  • Use Dark Turkey Meat: While lean turkey works, dark meat retains more moisture, ensuring a juicier and more flavorful filling.
  • Chop Ingredients Evenly: Finely chopping onions, water chestnuts, and carrots ensures they cook evenly and blend seamlessly with the turkey.
  • Properly Mince the Turkey: If you are working with whole turkey thighs, dice them into small pieces before mincing them in a food processor or by hand. This creates a more rustic texture compared to store-bought ground turkey.
  • Sauté in Layers: First, cook the turkey until browned, then push it to the side before adding onions and garlic. This technique allows the aromatics to develop deeper flavors without burning.
  • Let the Sauce Simmer: Once the sauce ingredients are added, let everything cook together for a couple of minutes to let the flavors meld.
  • Don’t Overfill the Lettuce Wraps: Too much filling will cause the wraps to fall apart, so add just enough for easy folding and eating.

Best Ways to Store & Reheat These Lettuce Wraps

If you love meal prepping, these wraps are a fantastic choice because they can be stored easily and assembled fresh whenever needed.

  • Store the Filling Separately: The turkey filling should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. This helps keep the lettuce fresh and prevents it from wilting.
  • Reheat Properly: When ready to eat, reheat the turkey filling in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes until warmed through. If using a microwave, heat in short 30-second bursts to avoid drying out the meat.
  • Freezing Option: While lettuce isn’t freezer-friendly, the turkey filling can be frozen for up to 3 months. Let it cool completely before transferring it to a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
  • Keep Lettuce Crisp: Store your butter lettuce or romaine in a separate container or wrapped in a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag to keep it fresh and crunchy.

  • 3 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce (or coconut aminos for soy-free option)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar-free hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha (adjust for spice level)
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)
  • 2 tablespoon chopped green onions (for garnish)

  • 1 head butter lettuce or romaine lettuce (for wrapping)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Turkey:
